Chairperson's Message for Thursday, May 2001, Honors & Past Chairmen Night It's hard to believe, but this is the last chairperson's message in the last newsletter of this Chapter year. It seems like only yesterday that the Chapter executive committee was looking forward to this year with our fingers crossed that there wouldn't be a Hurricane Floyd or winter storm to interrupt our series of meetings. Happily, we've come to the end of this year without having to cancel or reschedule any meetings. This month's meeting is the Chapter's chance to recognize those who have done so much to make the Liberty Bell Chapter the envy of the ASM organization. Our past Chairpersons are all invited to be our guests at this meeting, and history shows that we will get excellent participation. Long time members who have qualified will receive their pins for service. In addition, the Chapter will present its annual individual awards for service to ASM and the Liberty Bell Chapter. This meeting also provides the chance to look at the future of ASM International. We will award certificates to the participants in this year's MEI course, as well as the recipients of the Chapter-administered scholarships. This year, we have an additional college scholarship to award, thanks to the generosity of Solar Atmospheres. I'd also like to report that planning for next year is proceeding on schedule. All committee chairperson slots are now filled, and the individual chairpersons will be filling vacant committee slots and starting on next year's activities. I would like to encourage anyone who wants to participate in Chapter activities to contact me at 215-641-8849, or e-mail at jjaniszewski@ltk.com with your ideas. The Liberty Bell Chapter got where it is by the efforts of an interested, enthusiastic membership, and with your support we intend to remain at the top of the heap! What you will see on the Plant Tour. . . 4500 Ton Press The 4500-Ton Press is a two column, pull down press manufactured by Mannesmann Demag and was commissioned January 2000. This press utilizes fourteen 500hp pumps with four boost pumps generating 5, 396 psi of working pressure. This press uses two integrated manipulators and is fully automated, which makes this press the most highly automated press in the world. The 4500-Ton Press is supported by 10 certified batch furnaces with a working range of 1600F to 2300F +25F and are fully automatic. A semi-automatic stiff arm crane was installed June 2000 and is capable of carrying material from any furnace at speeds of up to 800 feet per minute. VIM Furnace Carpenter technology is a world leading manufacturer of Vacuum Induction Melted (VIM) specialty alloys and steels used in aerospace and other highly critical applications. Carpenter operates four Vacuum Induction Melting furnaces and has the largest tonnage capacity of any single VIM melt shop in the world. The largest and newest VIM furnace accounts for over 50% of total capacity. This furnace called a Vacuum Induction Degassing and Pouring (VIDP) furnace was installed in 1997 and is the largest of its type ever built. The furnace has a 24 ton per heat melt capacity, a 5 Megawatt solid state power supply , high capacity vacuum pumping system and computer controls to manage all systems. Metal from the melting chamber is transferred in the liquid state to a separate large volume chamber for casting under vacuum into molds. Most heats are cast into "electrode" molds for subsequent vacuum arc or electroslag remelting. Some heats are cast into rectangular "slab" molds for subsequent rolling into flat roll products. The VIDP furnace is housed in a new 15,000 square foot building which also houses raw material storage and management and other furnace support equipment. The #5 Mill The result of a $135 million dollar investment made in the mid-1980's, the #5 mill is capable of producing more grades in more sizes than any other Specialty Steel hot rolling mill that we know. In this mill, a Cogging operation is combined with 16 continuous hot rolling stands. Incoming material as large as 19 inches is first cogged into billets. These billets can then be rolled into finished products as small as 3/8"rounds. This capability is controlled by two computer systems; one for product tracking, (from heating to finishing) and the other for regulating the mill's electro-mechanical drive system and auxiliary systems. The SX-65 The SX-65 is a 1400 ton , 4 hammer high speed rotary forge with hammers striking the work piece at a rate of 172 hits a minute. This forge is the biggest rotary forge in the United States and is one of three forges of it's kind in the world. The forge is capable of reducing ingots as large as 26 inches or 16,000 pounds to finished billet products in one heating. A unique feature of the rotary forge is it's ability to manufacture multiple dimension bars (MDBs). This feature allows Carpenter to sell near net shape products, giving customers an advantage to reduce machining and manufacturing costs. The SX-32 is a 600 ton 4 hammer high speed rotary forge with hammers striking the work piece at a rate of 330 hits per minute. The forge can start with pieces 12. 5 inches in cross section or 2600 pounds. Minimum finish sizes are 2.5 inch round and 1 1/2 X 2 .5 inch flats. Like it's cousin the SX-65 it also has the capability to manufacture multiple dimension bars (MDBs). Please Note Please make separate reservations for the tour and baseball game. Car-Tech Tour - Call Roger Jones at 215-721-1502. Phillies Game - Call Rob DeKalb at 215-542-7600. To attend both, please make two calls. Thank you.
