Monthly Newsletter of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter

Chairperson's Message for Thursday, April 19, 2001, Sustaining Members Night

I write this as we emerge from winter into spring. As the days get longer and the air gets warmer, it seems appropriate that the Liberty Bell Chapter shifts gears, too. This month, our program will be less purely technical and more personal as Dr. Albert Sacco of NASA and Northeastern University will take materials processing into outer space with his presentation.

The sustaining members' night program this month provides a great illustration of several of the benefits of ASM membership. ASM membership allows you to network with fellow practitioners of materials science. The sustaining members' exhibition before the meeting provides one of the year's best opportunities for this networking. Second, ASM membership provides a place to obtain technical information; again, the exhibition provides many member companies a chance to distribute their information. And, our technical presentation this month also provides a view of the frontiers of materials science- literally. Finally, ASM provides opportunities for fun and entertainment. While I have not heard Dr. Sacco before, I understand that his talk is highly entertaining as well as informative.

Before I close, let me recognize our sustaining members committee for their hard work in preparing this month's program. Phil DeHennis (chair), Bill Henry, and Brian Wert have worked since last year's April meeting on not just this program, but our annual sustaining member's lunch and keeping the sustaining members list up to date. The Liberty Bell Chapter has a long tradition of strong sustaining member support, and these committee members have done a great job of keeping that tradition alive.

I hope to see all of you at this month's meeting!

John Janiszewski
2001-2002 Chairperson
