Monthly Newsletter of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter

Chairperson's Message for March, 2001

This message will represent my first official act as Chairman of the Liberty Bell Chapter. As he told us last month, Bob Hill has relocated out of the area and had to relinquish his duties for the balance of the chapter year. The bad news is that Bob will not be as readily available to guide my metamorphosis into Chairman. The good news, if there is any, is that Bob had a great team in place and the Chapter activities will continue to function without a hitch. I am continually surprised by the talent and enthusiasm of our volunteers in this Chapter. Whether involved in program planning, putting together communications such as this newsletter, running our education programs, or providing social programs where we can let our hair down, our members gladly put in long hours to keep the Liberty Bell Chapter the "best of the best" within ASM International.

Last month, Roger Jones provided the second of our heat treating-related programs for this year. His talk, focusing on the equipment and procedures used in vacuum heat treating, provided an excellent complement to Bill Jones's October presentation on the future of vacuum heat treating. This month's program represents the second in our mid-year sequence of awards presentations. Craig Clauser of Consulting Engineers, Inc. is this year's recipient of the Albert Sauveur award and will provide an insight into failure analysis as it applies to the litigation field.

This message would be incomplete without mentioning some of the recreational activities that are on the schedule. We try to schedule a variety of activities that will appeal to all of our members. Our annual Spring Dinner Dance will be held on March 31 at the Old York Road Country Club in Spring House, PA. Rob DeKalb and his committee have planned a first-class, memorable evening at a great facility. When spring arrives and outdoor activities are again pleasant, the Chapter will sponsor a night at the Reading Phillies. For further information, look in this newsletter or call Rob at 215-542-7600.

I would like to personally encourage every Chapter member to attend the social events and take this opportunity to get to know other members in a different, social setting. We hope to see all of you at both of these events.

John Janiszewski
2001-2002 Chairperson

Speaker: Mr. Craig D. Clauser of Consulting Engineering, Inc.

Topic: Failure Analysis

Craig D. Clauser, P.E., is Vice President of Consulting Engineers & Scientists, Inc., in Malvern, PA, a forensic engineering firm. Mr. Clauser began his professional career with Westinghouse Electric Corporation-Power Generation Division, in Lester, Pennsylvania, where he worked in the areas of material characterization and failure analysis. From Westinghouse, Mr. Clauser went to Phoenix Steel Corporation, where he worked in the areas of quality control and process metallurgy. He served as Technical Director for the corporation. Electric furnace melting, ladle metallurgy, continuous casting and ingot bottom pouring technology were used in producing the company's plate and seamless tube products. Mr. Clauser was extensively involved in the development of processes for producing clean steel and the development of armor plate. Most recently, he has been employed by Consulting Engineers & Scientists, Inc., where a major portion of his work involves material failure analysis of matters which may potentially become involved in litigation.
