Chairperson's Message Thursday, April 20, 2006 Sustaining Members Night Greetings, ASM International's Liberty Bell Chapter! It's finally April. The Void is over. Baseball is back. In its own unique way, our ASM Chapter will honor the Great American Pastime at the end of this month, as we tour the Battleship New Jersey and then watch the Camden Riversharks (an independent minor league baseball team) in their Opening Night Game, followed by a fireworks display over the Delaware River. (Only the fireworks will be over the river. You get to stay in your seat.) Just one short week later, we'll get together for Dinner, Drinks and Dancing at out annual Spring Fling, but first, we have our biggest night of the year. In addition to the technical talk, we'll be honoring our Sustaining Members with a mini-exposition and judging the graduate students' poster contest, with $1000 in total prizes! In case you have trouble remembering all we have to do in April, I've heard that music can be helpful. This little ditty should help jog your memory. I think you'll know the tune: One, two, three, one, two three: Take me out to A - S - M - ! Sus - taining Members' Night! First: Mini-Expo; Then: Technical Talk - "All-Wheel Drive Bicycles" (Ride them, Don't walk!) But first judge, judge, judge poster con - test! Three cash prizes for you grads! Then a Ship - tour, ball game and fireworks Twenty-one bucks? Not Bad! OK, so it isn't Shakespeare, but you get the point. By the way, speaking of "sustaining" members (with a lower-case "s"), the Chapter could still use the support of anyone who's willing to be a meeting sponsor. Please contact Fred Klock if you can help. With Respect and Thanks, Travis M. Nelson 2005-06 ASM Liberty Bell Chapter Chairman This Month's Meeting Features... Development & Marketing of "All Wheel Drive" in the Motorcycle & Bicycle Industry Speaker: Steve Christini, Christini Technologies, Inc. Steve Christini is the founder and President of Christini Technologies, Inc., the worldÕs leading developer of All-Wheel Drive Mountain Bikes and shaft driven AWD Motorcycles. Steve is from Towanda, Pennsylvania and was an active inventor and sportsman in his early years. He has been an enthusiast of mechanical inventions and has an eye for product development that started with modeling and design at an early age. In 1990, he moved to Italy, where he discovered his love of mountain biking. After returning from Italy, he attended Villanova University where he pursued Mechanical Engineering and Business. While at Villanova, Steve developed the concept of a shaft drive All Wheel Drive bicycle, and made it his Senior Design project. He developed and built the first prototype on Villanova's Campus and was able to prove that AWD works on a 2-Wheel vehicle. After graduating in 1995, Steve pursued a career at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. where he worked in a variety of engineering roles until the summer of 1998. At that time, he left the corporate world, and pursued the dream that began while at Villanova University. Development of the refined technology began in 1998 and Christini Technologies, Inc. was formed in 1999 after its initial financing. The first production two wheel drive mountain bike was sold in August of 2002. Currently the company has a partnership with Jeep bicycles to manufacture and distribute the AWD technology worldwide. Christini Technologies, Inc. also sells bikes in the US and currently exports to 15 countries under the Christini brand. Christini has also developed and implemented this shaft drive technology into motorcycles. They are currently developing an aftermarket kit that enables riders to upgrade their motorcycles to All Wheel Drive, with the ultimate goal of partnering with a large OEM to make AWD a mainstream motorcycle technology. In his spare time, Steve enjoys outdoor sports including Wakeboarding, Snowboarding, and biking. Meeting Registration -- Spouses and guests are invited and welcome. (DVSF) was founded in 1949 and incorporated in 1993, making it one of the oldest Fairs in the country. It is now also one of the largest. The Fairs were designed as a vehicle for stimulating interest in science and technology among students in middle and high schools in the tri-state area. The philosophy behind the Fairs is that students learn science by doing science. The Delaware Valley Science Fairs are seeking research-experienced scientists, engineers or technologists willing to volunteer one day of their expertise to help one of the most important science education programs in the Delaware Valley. The ASM International Foundation has traditionally supported Science Fairs throughout the country and offers awards to projects focused on Materials Science and Engineering. We can help by volunteering to Judge these special awards, or any other category. Our local Fair will be held in Fort Washington in April 4-6.
