Chairperson's Message Thursday, March 16, 2006 Albert Sauveur Award Night The month of March has many things associated with it: Some of these, like the betrayal of Julius Caesar, aren't necessarily something we think of fondly. Others, like March Madness in college basketball, spring training in major league baseball, St. Patrick's Day, and the beginning of Spring, are exciting and joyous events, even if you don't much care for green beer. As it happens, our monthly technical meeting, March 16th, also marks my wife Sunny's 30th birthday, and so I may not see you all again at Williamson's until Sustaining Members' night in April, but I leave you in Howard Cheetham's capable hands. March also brings the Albert Sauveur Award Night to the Philadelphia Chapter of ASM International. Dr. Sam Nash, FASM, will relate one small example from his illustrious career as a metallurgist, teacher and archaeologist (as described on the front of this newsletter). That career has earned him numerous honors, the most recent of which is this year's Sauveur Award, for outstanding achievement in the Science of Metals. Congratulations to Dr. Nash! No Chairman's message would be complete without a plea to the membership of this great Chapter for its help. Woody Allen once said that, "80% of success is just showing up", and this is as true in materials science as it is in comedy. The Philadelphia Chapter enjoys a large, active membership, but we can always use more: More Meeting Sponsors; more Sustaining Members; more committee volunteers; more attendees at technical meetings and social events. Support your Chapter by "just showing up" to the Battleship New Jersey tour & Camden Riversharks Opening Night (with fireworks!), or the Spring Dinner Dance or the Golf Outing in June. Or all three! They're great ways to connect with other members, and will help both you and the Chapter towards success. With Respect and Thanks, Travis M. Nelson 2005-06 ASM Liberty Bell Chapter Chairman This Month's Meeting Features... This Month's Meeting Topic... Spanish Colonial Iron or Modern American Steel: An Archaeometallurgical Case Study Speaker: Sam Nash, Sc. D., University of Pennsylvania Dr. Nash, Fellow, ASM International, earned his Sc.D. at MIT with a thesis on martensite. His first employment as a research physical metallurgist was at the U.S. Army Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia. His activities were mainly concerned with ferrous and non-ferrous alloy development with emphasis upon optical and electron microscopy, x-ray and microprobe analysis. He was also engaged extensively in failure analysis work and as a consultant to the Army Research Office, which sponsored research worldwide. It was during this phase of his career as a research metallurgist that he began his teaching career as an Adjunct Professor of Metallurgy at Drexel University's Evening College. Soon after the Arsenal was phased of out service, he joined the faculty of Drexel's Department of Materials Engineering and was eventually promoted to University Lecturer and was also named as Assistant Department Head. In that capacity, Dr. Nash participated in the organization and establishment of the new Evening and University College (now known as the Goodwin College). When he decided to retire from teaching, Dr. Nash went to the Museum Applied Science Center for Archaeology (MASCA), at the University of Pennsylvania Museum, and is culminating his career as the resident archaeometallurgist. He has co-authored many papers and has been recognized by a recent Ph.D. candidate in archaeology as her teacher in her thesis about the Illinois Indians. This collaboration led to his being contacted by the archaeologists who were involved in the construction of a bridge on the Ouachita River, Arkansas, that is the setting for his discussion this evening. Dr. Nash continues to work with the scholars and archaeology majors from the University of Pennsylvania. TOPIC: Spanish Colonial Iron or Modern American Steel: An Archaeometallurgical Case Study While excavating a Caddo Indian cemetery dating to the 16th century, Helm Site, Hot Springs, Arkansas, archaeologists happened upon a nondescript fragment of iron next to the leg of an adult male. Among the questions raised by this find, the most intriguing concerned the possible origin of the fragment: was it Spanish iron from a tool or weapon carried by DeSoto's soldiers who were marauding in the Helm Site area in 1540, or since the land had been cultivated in the past century, could the fragment have come from a farm machine? Accordingly, two artifacts of firm DeSoto provenance were obtained and compared to the fragment in question on the basis of metallographic structure and chemical composition. It was thus possible to establish that whereas the two DeSoto artifacts had been made of "bloomery" iron, the fragment in question was actually a piece of modern low-carbon steel. "Jack" Quigley Our chapter, on Dec. 26, 2006, lost a past Chapter Chair, and friend. Jack was our Chapter Chair in 1981-82, and remained active in, and a valued contributor to, our chapter for many many years thereafter. His continued contributions to our chapter have been recognized by his awards of the 1978 Presidents Award and the 1991 Chapter Distinguished Service Award. Jack is also remembered for his tenor voice as part of a quartet that sang at ASM meetings and for organizing the Landlubbers Holiday Cruise. Jack was a 1957 graduate in Mechanical Engineering from the Indiana Institute of Technology. He was employed by Day Engineering and Surface Combustion as an engineer before starting his successful manufacturer's representative company - ThermQuip in 1978 and retired in 1995. ThermQuip specialized in furnaces and furnace equipment and he specifically represented Procedyne and marketed their fluid bed furnaces. Jack was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War, a very active member of St. Agnes Church in Sellersville and volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America and coached Little League Baseball and enjoyed traveling. Jack is survived by his wife Jean and 5 children and 13 grandchildren. Jack and his contributions will be remembered by the chapter and its members and will be missed especially at the March meetings for his St. Patrick's toasts and songs. (DVSF) was founded in 1949 and incorporated in 1993, making it one of the oldest Fairs in the country. It is now also one of the largest. The Fairs were designed as a vehicle for stimulating interest in science and technology among students in middle and high schools in the tri-state area. The philosophy behind the Fairs is that students learn science by doing science. The Delaware Valley Science Fairs are seeking research-experienced scientists, engineers or technologists willing to volunteer one day of their expertise to help one of the most important science education programs in the Delaware Valley. The ASM International Foundation has traditionally supported Science Fairs throughout the country and offers awards to projects focused on Materials Science and Engineering. We can help by volunteering to Judge these special awards, or any other category. Our local Fair will be held in Fort Washington in April 4-6.
