Continuing Education Night

Greetings and Salutations to the Liberty Bell Chapter of ASM International!
It's February (or will be by the time you read this) and that means several things: Punxsutawney Phil either did or did not see his shadow, we either do or do not have another month and a half of wintry weather before us, and The Football Game I'm Not Allowed to Name is over, and your team either did or did not win. Well, OK, the team most of us follow watched it from the comforts of their own living rooms, but there's always Next Year.
Next Year, however, is for football players. Materials professionals must live in The Now, and so ASM has its usual lineup of social and professional meetings this winter and spring for your benefit. Don Jordan is planning another tour, this time a trip to the Battleship New Jersey, which is docked in Camden. One of our Directors, Steve Alberico, may even be able to get us a tour guide who can offer us some materials engineering insights that most tourists don't get.
We've also got our annual Spring Dinner/Dance coming up at Old York Road Country Club on May 6th, and Entertainment Chairman Jamie Jones is working feverishly to make sure every detail is addressed and that the evening is a lot of fun for all attending. June will feature the Annual ASM/ASNT Golf Outing and the summer may bring us another baseball game trip with the Lehigh Valley Chapter.
But before that, there are several technical meetings, including this month's Continuing Education Night. James Cirilli of PSEG will tell us about some of the challenges involved in dealing with corrosion in nuclear power plants, an interesting and very important topic, I'm sure we'd all agree.
One thing that allows us to have such meetings and address such topics is Meeting Sponsorship. Companies and individuals who sponsor meetings allow us to welcome students (speaking of Continuing Education!) by having a $25 drawing for them alone without forcing them to buy tickets. Meeting Sponsors also allow us to keep meeting at Williamson's by helping to subsidize the costs of everyone's meals, especially students and retirees. A small sacrifice on your part (or your company's) allows the Liberty Bell Chapter to keep its retired sages and rising young stars involved with the monthly happenings of ASM. So if you haven't yet sponsored a meeting this year, please contact Fred Klock to do so. And if you have? Well, do it again. It's a small price to pay to make sure that the past, present and future of the materials engineering can interact regularly.

Managing Materials Degradation in the Nuclear Power Industry
Speaker: James Cirilli, PSEG
Jim Cirilli has 25 years of professional experience providing services in the fields of metallurgy, materials and welding engineering, nondestructive examination, materials problem solving, and failure analysis. Eighteen of those twenty-five years were spent in the electric power industry with Long Island Lighting Company, Northeast Utilities and currently with PSEG Nuclear. Seven years of Jim's career were spent at Lehigh Testing Laboratories, Inc., an independent materials testing laboratory, with primary responsibility for directing failure investigations for industrial and legal clients.
Mr. Cirilli has a BS in Metallurgy from The Pennsylvania State University and a MS in Metallurgy from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Mr. Cirilli is the Secretary of the Brandywine Valley Chapter of ASM, a member of AWS and an advisory committee member of the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program at Delaware State Technical College.
TOPIC: Managing Materials Degradation in the Nuclear Power Industry
As a result of several recent nuclear industry issues involving materials degradation, the Nuclear Strategic Issues Advisory Committee (NSIAC), in May 2003, unanimously approved the "Industry Initiative on Management of Materials Issues" and its associated "Guideline for the Management of Materials Issues," NEI 03-08. NEI 03-08 creates a Materials Executive Oversight Group (MEOG) and a Materials Technical Advisory Group (MTAG) to provide policy direction, oversight and support to the industry's materials programs. The Initiative's policy-objective is to have a more forward-looking, coordinated industry-wide program. This presentation will highlight some of nuclear power's more significant materials degradation issues and how the materials initiative is working to resolve them.

ASM Liberty Bell Chapter to Provide Three Scholarships in 2006
In the academic year of 2005-2006, the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter will provide three scholarships ($1,500.00 each) to college engineering students who intend to pursue a career in Materials Science. All eligible students are encouraged to apply. One full-page essay (single spaced, Arial font, with font size between 10 to 12), stating his/her commitment to the Materials Science profession, will be required. C.F. Burns Memorial Poster Contest
The Liberty Bell Chapter will be holding its 5th annual poster contest for graduate students during our Sustaining Members Night on April 20, 2006. This will be the third year the contest is sponsored by Solar Atmospheres, Inc. Prize money will ne $500 for 1st Place, $300 for 2nd Place and $200 for 3rd Place. Due to limited space, we are asking students to pre-register. Space will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis. Delaware Valley Science Fairs
Delaware Valley Science Fairs, Inc. (DVSF) was founded in 1949 and incorporated in 1993, making it one of the oldest Fairs in the country. It is now also one of the largest. The Fairs were designed as a vehicle for stimulating interest in science and technology among students in middle and high schools in the tri-state area. The philosophy behind the Fairs is that students learn science by doing science.
The Delaware Valley Science Fairs are seeking research-experienced scientists, engineers or technologists willing to volunteer one day of their expertise to help one of the most important science education programs in the Delaware Valley.
The ASM International Foundation has traditionally supported Science Fairs throughout the country and offers awards to projects focused on Materials Science and Engineering. We can help by volunteering to Judge these special awards, or any other category. Our local Fair will be held in Fort Washington in April 4-6.

Materials Camp 2006
Materials Camp 2006 will run from July 10-14th at Drexel University. We need YOU (yes all of our members) to do two simple things:
- Pass the message on to the High School Science teachers and Guidance counselors where you live. Refer them to our website for details www.asm-philadelphia.com. The deadline for applications will be April 15th 2006.
- Ask the decision makers at your company if they will SPONSOR the event. This a great opportunity for some company PR and possible recruiting outreach. Then put me, howardcheetham@comcast.net, in touch with them.
High School Essay Contest
Three $100 awards will be given to high school students. To enter the contest, write an essay no more than 500 words on the following topic: "Developments made by materials engineers have allowed for significant technological advancements in a variety of fields."
- Choose an object that has been significantly improved through the work of materials engineers (suggestions are listed below).
- Compare the historical technology to the current state of the art technology of the object.
- Describe how advancements in materials engineering improved that item.

Mission Statement
The Philadelphia "Liberty Bell" Chapter of ASM International supports the development and continuance of the materials industry in the Philadelphia area. Chapter activities strive to inform the local technical community of new developments in materials, raise the visibility of the materials industry, provide educational opportunities in materials technology, recruit new people and organizations into materials-related activities, and provide networking opportunities for members of the materials community. The Chapter works with ASM International to use our joint resources to accomplish this mission.

Any Chapter Member who needs to make a change to their membership listing or to their company affiliation listing must call Membership Service, ASM International at 1-800-336-5152 or use the ASM website at www.asminternational.org. This will permanently update your information.
We depend on ASM International to receive our updated mailing list for this newsletter. So please do not sent information to the return address on this newsletter.
Meeting Cancellation Notification
In the event of cancellation of a meeting due to inclement weather, we will broadcast the news as part of KYW News radio's (1060AM) Storm Center Service. ASM cancellations will be specifically announced when KYW airs community cancellations at :20 and :50 past each hour during the afternoon of the day of the meeting. ASM's name will be specifically mentioned, so listen for the name rather than an organization number as is used for schools.
