Monthly Newsletter of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter

Eisenman Award Night

Greetings Philadelphia ASM Family & Friends.

A Holiday-Inspired Message for the Liberty Bell Chapter of ASM:

'Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the Chapter
Metallurgical samples were polished and lapped, or
Etched for analysis. Raw material purchases,
Large and small batches heat-treated in furnaces,
Joining, machining, engineering consulting,
Castings and forgings and stampings resulting
In parts for aerospace, autos and fridges,
Parts with grooves and threads and ridges.
All this is possible through technology:
Materials engineering! (Not astrology.)

Your ASM Chapter facilitates these things
With handbooks, journals and of course monthly meetings.
Social engagements like the Spring Dinner Dance
And visits to tube mills (somewhat less romance...)
Give us chances to network and learn from each other,
While Materials Camps raise up sisters and brothers
Who'll carry the torch of Materials Science.
So help a committee, form an alliance
With incoming Chairman, esteemed Howard Cheetham.
Can't have too many volunteers. (Trust me, we need 'em.)
It's fun and interesting, instructive, rewarding,
And helps your career towards that yacht*, affording!

*Lawyers from ASM International have informed me that you will not receive any refund of your membership dues if it turns out that you can never afford a yacht. But trust me, participating in the Chapter's Executive and Operating Committees is plenty rewarding without the boat.

Travis M. Nelson
2005-06 Chapter Chair

Powder Metallurgy - A Long Term Growth Technology

Speaker:  Patrick J. McGeehan, Hoeganaes Corp.

Patrick J. McGeehan is Senior Vice President, Technology, Hoeganaes Corporation, Cinnaminson, NJ where he has worked since 1983. He received both his BS (1977) and MS (1985) in Materials Engineering from Drexel University. His other employment experience after graduating from Drexel was Westinghouse Electric and Phoenix Steel Corporations.

An ASM member since 1974 and the sustaining member representative for Hoeganaes since 1990, he was very active in the Philadelphia chapter during the 1980's.

Mr. McGeehan was a past recipient of the Chapter's Young Member award and President's award. He also served as Chapter Executive Secretary for three years.

Since joining Hoeganaes, Mr. McGeehan has held positions of increasing responsibility in R&D, plant management, corporate operations and global technology and business development oversight.

TOPIC: Powder Metallurgy - A Long Term Growth Technology

Ferrous powder metallurgy (P/M) has a 50+ year history of sustained growth in North America. This technology has continuously penetrated automotive, off-road, industrial, power tools, office machines and numerous other structural components. Principally marketed as a cost effective, near net shape technology, industry growth has been driven by substitutions for castings, forgings and screw machine parts.

This talk will review the history and future of the P/M industry and discuss new developments in conventional press and sinter P/M part production as well as recent advances driving the maturity of metal injection molding (MIM) as a complementary powder based metalworking system.

ASM Liberty Bell Chapter to Provide Three Scholarships in 2006

In the academic year of 2005-2006, the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter will provide three scholarships ($1500.00 each) to college engineering students who intend to pursue a career in Materials Science. All eligible students are encouraged to apply. One full-page essay (single spaced, Arial font, with font size between 10 to 12), stating his/her commitment to the Materials Science profession, will be required. Please contact Dr. Kei-Peng Jen at Villanova University for the application form and details (e-mail: kei-peng.jen@villanova.edu; Tel: 610-519-7311). The deadline for application is March 1, 2006.

Materials Camp 2006

Materials Camp 2006 will run from July 10-14th at Drexel University. We need YOU (yes all of our members) to do two simple things:
  1. Pass the message on to the High School Science teachers and Guidance counselors where you live. Refer them to our website for details www.asm-philadelphia.com. The deadline for applications will be April 15th 2006.

  2. Ask the decision makers at your company if they will SPONSOR the event. This a great opportunity for some company PR and possible recruiting outreach. Then put me howardcheetham@comcast.net in touch with them.

High School Essay Contest

Three $100 awards will be given to high school students. To enter the contest, write an essay no more than 500 words on the following topic: "Developments made by materials engineers have allowed for significant technological advancements in a variety of fields."
  1. Choose an object that has been significantly improved through the work of materials engineers (suggestions are listed below).

  2. Compare the historical technology to the current state of the art technology of the object.

  3. Describe how advancements in materials engineering improved that item.

Examples:

  • Automobile: paint, bumpers, body, windows/glass, engine block, etc.
  • Medical: dental fillings and implants, etc.
  • Electronic Devices: computer processors, flat panel televisions
  • Clothing/Fabrics: Stain resistant carpeting, moisture wicking clothing
  • Sports Equipment: Hockey stick, tennis racquet, baseball bat, kayak

Please submit the following application form, along with your type written essay to Attn: Elizabeth Hoffman, Dept of Materials Science and Engineering, 344 LeBow, Drexel University, 3141 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19104. Applications will be accepted no later than February 1, 2006. Winners will be notified no later than March 31, 2006. Questions regarding the essay contest can be directed to: materialsessaycontest@gmail.com.
