Monthly Newsletter of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter

Chairperson's Message for February, 2001

This month's meeting is our Eisenmann Award Night. Our guest speaker this night will be Roger Jones who is the President of Solar Atmospheres, Inc. I am sure you will find the topic of Roger's talk, "Living Life in a Vacuum", very informative.

I continue to urge all Chapter members to come out, support, and participate in the many Chapter activities. March 31st is our annual "Spring Fling" dinner dance. This year this event will be held at a new venue- Old York Road Country Club. OYRC has a beautiful clubhouse that will be a great setting for our annual event. Please mark your calendar accordingly.

I wish to again remind everyone of the Chapter scholarship program. This year our scholarship committee will award three high school scholarships worth $300.00 each. In addition, we will award four collegiate scholarships, one at $2,000.00, two at $1,500.00, and one at $1,000.00. I encourage all members to contact high school students and/or undergraduate materials engineering students, to inform them of these award and scholarship opportunities.

In conclusion, as many of our chapter members already know, this spring my family and I will be relocated to Western Pennsylvania. I will be in charge of setting up a brand new, state of the art vacuum commercial heat treating plant, in Hermitage, PA. I am extremely honored to be the chosen one to run this plant for the Solar organization. However, at the time of writing this message, I realize that the majority of my time must now be invested in Western PA. Therefore, I will try to continue my commitment as your Chapter chairperson until this meeting. After the February meeting I anticipate handing the gavel over to John Janiszewski, our Vice Chairman. John will carry the torch for the balance of the year.

I have sincerely enjoyed the ASM comradship with all members over the past 20 years. I will surely miss all of the friendships, the information gained about new technologies, the networking, and the synergy that occurred every month and at social events. I am sure I will remain active in either the Pittsburgh or the Cleveland Chapters or both. However, I will always have fond memories of my home Chapter, the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter - the best chapter in the world!

Bob Hill
2000-2001 Chairperson

He currently serves as the Professional Development Committee Chairman. Roger has served at the ASM International level as well. He chaired the Membership Committee in 1996-97 and is currently a member of the Heat Treating Society Immediate Needs Committee and the Joint Heat Treating Training Council. Roger has given talks and published various technical papers in Industrial Heating, Advanced Materials and Processes, and other heat processing related publications.

Living Life In A Vacuum

Vacuum processing of materials is an ongoing and changing phenomena. The capability to more precisely process materials through controlled environments and computer programming is advancing. Our lives, and everything we do, revolve around the metals and materials that are processed in vacuum equipment.

Not only has the processing changed but also so has the equipment to process materials. The past, present and future of vacuum processing will be discussed and illustrated. The speaker will address these changes and other challenges he has experienced in the last 25 years in the vacuum heat processing industry.

Spouses and guests are invited and welcome. This meeting will be held at Williamson Restaurant, Easton Road, Horsham, PA. Reservations are necessary - Call: (215) 643-3369 (OH-DE-FOX), or you may register using our online form. Please don't call if you have already reserved via this web site LINK.
