Chairperson's Message Thursday, September 15, 2005 Opening Night Greetings fellow materials enthusiasts! I hope that everyone reading this had a relaxing, hard-earned rest of some sort over the summer months, and I know that we are all looking forward to a new year with the Philadelphia ASM Chapter. This summer, while you were on vacation (either from ASM or from your job in general), several of our fellow members were hard at work making sure that the first ever Philadelphia ASM Materials Camp was a success. Rick Knight, Liz Hoffman and the rest of the team at Drexel managed to get through an entire week without losing any of the 20 high school students in attendance, and I have it on good authority that some of them even learned something! Howard Cheetham, who chaired the committee, will attend a seminar in September to present some of our successes and challenges with this Camp and to learn from other ASM members around the world who have also sponsored camps like this. We completed another Five-Star year in 2004-05, and your Executive and Operating Committee members are working hard year-round to make sure that the Liberty Bell Chapter is perennially one of the best run and successful chapters in ASM International, and 2005-06 looks to be no exception to that rule. We have a great lineup of technical talks in store for this year, some social events, plant tours and other networking opportunities for you. Is something missing? Is there a suggestion or comment you have about how the Liberty Bell Chapter might offer its membership more or work better? Let us know. Feel free to volunteer your suggestions, or better yet, your time. Here's looking forward to a great year! Travis Nelson 2005-06 Chapter Chair This Month's Meeting Features... Dinner Menu: Fresh Garden Salad, Pot Roast of Beef, Glazed Baby Carrots, Parslied Red Potatoes, Ice Cream Cake w/Chocolate Sauce. Social Hour -- 6:00-7:00 p.m., Dinner -- 7:00 p.m. Price -- $24.00, Retirees -- $15.00, Students -- $12.00 Technical Chairperson: Jay Millane, Tinius Olsen Testing Machines Co., Inc. International Standardization: Interface of ASTM and ISO Standards Speaker: KATHIE E. MORGAN, ASTM International Kathie E. Morgan is General Manager, Technical Committee Support for ASTM International. Kathie joined the staff of ASTM International in 1984. She has served as staff manager and director until assuming her current position in 2002. As General Manager, Kathie oversees various support departments for ASTM including Meetings Services and Committee Services. She has a BS Degree in Chemical Engineering from Lafayette College and an MBA from Widener University. TOPIC: International Standardization: Interface of ASTM and ISO Standards With the increased globalization of trade and commerce, standards have a direct impact on market penetration and competitiveness. How is the standards development process responding the globalization of business? Should the product be built to the standards of the manufacturer or the purchaser? What standards development process should be used? ASTM International, one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world, has numerous initiatives underway to globalize its standards development process and expand the broad based use and application of ASTM standards. In this presentation, Kathie Morgan, General Manager of Technical Committee Support, ASTM International, will discuss the changing world of global standardization including recent ASTM initiatives and coordination between ASTM International and the International Standards Organization (ISO). Meeting Registration -- Spouses and guests are invited and welcome. This meeting will be held at Williamson Restaurant, Easton Road, Horsham, PA. Liberty Bell Chapter's First Materials Camp Here are just some of the great comments that we received from the students that attended our first Materials Camp. I think we can say that it was very successful! "Thank you for allowing me to take part in this great opportunity. The camp was fun...everyone was friendly, I don't want to leave." "It was a great experience...very likely that I will study to become a Materials Engineer...enjoyed the week...would recommend...very interesting...loved the material mentors." "Fun!...I loved the Materials Camp! I had a wonderful time...a great experience." The camp ran from June 27th to July 1st and was attended by 20 students from all around the Philadelphia area. Drexel University provided the venue and strong support from the faculty, as well as 14 fantastic volunteer grad students that handled the labs, lectures and generally looked after the students. During the week the students learned about the Samurai sword, and then did steel heat treatments and mechanical properties. They looked at bio- and nano-materials and were introduced to the electron-microscope. They experimented with ceramics and polymer slimes and foams. The highlight for all was building their own composite bridges and then testing them to destruction on the last day. "Chick" Mathews Our chapter back on May 23rd, lost a past chapter Chair, and a friend to all. Chick was our Chapter Chair in 1974-75, and remained active and was a valued contributor to our chapter until the end. This is exemplified by the awards the Chapter bestowed on Chick: The 1985 Phila. Chapter Distinguished Service Award, the 1997 Adolph Schaefer Special Achievement Award, the 1999 Meritorious Service Award, and culminated by his 1987 Delaware Metals Person of the Year Award. Chic graduated from Penn State in 1942 with a degree in Metallurgy and after a long career, he retired from Superior Tube in 1987 as their Chief Metallurgist after serving as their Technical Services Metallurgist and several other STC positions. Chick also served in the Navy in WWII and was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant (JG) in l946. Chick also was a lifelong tennis player, but took up other sports so seriously that it resulted in a Gold Metal at the 1999 Senior Games in Orlando in the Triathlon event. He was a member of the Genealogy Society of Pa., Sons of the Revolution, and volunteered for the Red Cross and was very active in his retirement community to include serving as its President. Chick will be sorely missed, except at 50-50 drawing time. In Memoriam: William de Mauriac Our chapter back on March 25th, lost our oldest member and oldest past Chapter Chair, one who did so much for the chapter before most of us were even born or at least graduated. William de Mauriac was our Chapter Chair back in l948-49!! He was also the oldest living member of the Engineers Club of Phila. and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Phi Sigma Kappa, The Countrymen of Chester County, and Vice President of the Board of Trustees of Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle, NJ. William graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1931, spent his entire career with Philadelphia Electric Company (now Peco Energy) and retired in l972 as Manager of Station Operations, which included all 12 PE generating stations and some 2000+ employees. William was responsible for bringing PE's maintenance organization into the modern era by setting up formal training and qualification programs for all maintenance personnel. William de Mauriac probably would have received more local awards had he been born at least 10 years later, although he was one of our first receipients of the Delaware Valley Metals Person of the Year Award in 1957. Our older members will still remember the contributions that William made to our chapter to help establish the chapter as it is today and we are all thankful for those contributions. Now Sending E-Newsletter During the 2005-06 Chapter year the Liberty Bell Chapter will have an e-newsletter in addition to the familiar blue mailer. This will allow us to make late additions to the newsletter. Our current closing date is a full 6 or 7 weeks before the monthly meeting to allow time for printing and third class mail. We shoot for having it delivered during the first week of the month. The e-newsletter will close several weeks later. This will also give you a choice of how you wish to receive the chapter news. We are planning to include business card size ads in the e-newsletter. You can run an ad for a one time fee of $100 for 8 placements This is a very economical way to reach the 400 Philadelphia ASM members with e-mail. If you wish to run a one time job placement ad, those ads can be run for a monthly fee of $25. Contact Jim Watters or Anna Whitehead for more information. Support Your Local Chapter by advertising in the 2004-2005 Liberty Bell Chapter Yearbook. Please contact Mike Drakeley at 215-721-1502 x 213 or mjd@solaratm.com to reserve your space..
