Honors & Past Charimen Night

As Spring arrives, another ASM year ends and a new one begins for the Philadelphia "Liberty Bell" Chapter. Much as we have for the last 86 years, we will continue to work towards the betterment of the materials science and engineering industries: supporting, educating, networking and fellowshipping with each other in order that we all might grow in our respective professions and lives.

So what's different about this coming 2005-06 season? Plenty. The Liberty Bell Chapter is about to hold its first ever Materials Camp at Drexel University, hopefully one of many to come. The future leaders of our profession will be attending this camp, and it falls on us to show them that the science of materials would make worthy pursuit for a life's work. It also falls on us to make sure that the Camp has everything it needs to accomplish this task, and to this end, we must collectively support this endeavor, both financially and with our time, knowledge and energy.

Another difference this year will be the schedule of events. National Officer's Night will fall in November this year, rather than January, giving our Chapter one of the first opportunities to meet the incoming President of ASM International.

On a much smaller scale, I personally am privileged (and just slightly terrified) to have been selected the local Chairperson for this year. Because of my relative youth and inexperience, I cannot help but feel entirely inadequate for the task set before me. Nevertheless, in my brief tenure with the Executive Committee, I have been continually impressed both by the tradition in which the history of this Chapter is steeped and the innovation with which its leaders guide it. I have no doubt that this leadership team's wealth of experience and knowledge will be there throughout this year to support and guide me in this immense undertaking.

More importantly, I am confident that we will together continue to find ways to serve the materials community and our members as individuals. As always, we hope to see some new faces at the monthly meetings, social events and educational courses, so bring a friend or co-worker. In addition, believe it or not, your knowledge and experience is needed on the Executive and Operating teams.

So volunteer now. You can thank us later.

Travis Nelson
2005-06 Chairperson
