Chairperson's Message Thursday, September 23, 2004 Opening Night Greetings & welcome to another year with ASM. There are so many things that have happened over the summer, so I'll get right to it. I am pleased to announce that we will be joined at our September meeting by the members of the Lehigh Valley chapter. We are looking forward to welcoming our fellow ASM members from the north & I hope we have a good turn out of our own membership. Our speaker for this meeting is our own Hira Ahluwalia. His topic strikes to the root of our professional society, combating corrosion through materials selection. This summer some of our members along with representatives from Drexel University visited the Materials Camp being held at Lehigh University. After some discussion, the Liberty Bell chapter along with Drexel University has decided to host a Materials Camp for the summer of 2005. This will be a one week day camp to be held at Drexel with the purpose of introducing high school students to the material sciences. There will be quite a bit of work to pull this off and we have a great core of graduate students at Drexel that have already committed to making this work. More information will be coming soon about the camp. In continuing with the idea of outreach towards younger students and introducing them to the material sciences, our chapter is starting up the high school essay contest again. This program will be organized and run by our young members committee. I am also very pleased to announce that Materials Resources International, based in Lansdale, PA, has agreed to be the sponsor for this contest. Again, more information will be coming soon. Along with all of this, there have been the normal summer activities for the chapter. The yearbook looks wonderful (as always). Ed & Terry Mazeika have done a great job again. I would also like to mention the tremendous job Mike Drakeley and the advertising committee did this year, getting ads and contracts right up to the last week. If the summer is any indication, this should be a very busy and productive year. See you at the September meeting, Scott Nyce Chairperson 2004-05 This Month's Meeting Features... Social Hour -- 6:00-7:00 p.m., Dinner -- 7:00 p.m. Price -- $23.00, Retirees -- $15.00, Students -- $12.00 Technical Chairperson: Ron Cox, Stork MMA Testing Labs Meeting Sponsors: Stork MMA Testing Labs, Ramball TestLab, Materials Selection Resources Topic: Combating Corrosion Through Materials Selection Speaker: HIRA AHLUWALIA, Ph.D., Materials Selection Resources Dr. Hira Ahluwalia is President of Material Selection Resources, Inc. Material Selection Resources (MSR) is a materials engineering and corrosion consulting organization based in New Jersey, serving the chemical, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and metal industries. Active participation in Industry organizations ensures that MSR stays at the forefront of materials technology, enabling them to provide their clients with the best, new and novel methodologies to use materials successfully. MSR provides its clients with superior materials and corrosion assistance through its many strategic alliances with the premier corrosion and materials professionals and laboratories. Dr. Ahluwalia has extensive experience in the field of corrosion and material science and has published numerous technical papers. His areas of expertise include material selection, corrosion testing, metallurgy, and failure analysis. He has a Ph.D. in Materials and Corrosion Engineering from Newcastle University, United Kingdom. A 15-year ASM, Material Technology Institute, and NACE member, Ahluwalia is currently the Vice-Chairman of the NACE Annual Conference Committee. Ahluwalia is currently the chairman for the revision of the chapter on Corrosion in the Chemical Process Industries for the ASM Handbook, Volume 13B. Tel: 609-737-8226, www.doctormetals.com Topic: Combating Corrosion Through Materials Selection According to a recent study sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), corrosion costs the U.S. industry 3% of the gross national product (GNP) value. This means the direct costs, replacement and cost of corrosion protection is about $276 billion annually. In more comprehensible numbers, the cost is over $1000 per person each year. It is estimated that at least a third of the cost is entirely unnecessary. Metals corrode for different reasons, each with their own mechanism. In this presentation some of the common forms of corrosion, e.g. uniform, pitting, corrosion under insulation and stress corrosion cracking will be discussed. Understanding the degradation mode is key to controlling and preventing corrosion. Careful material selection, good design and quality fabrication can avoid the most serious corrosion problems. Highly alloyed stainless steels and nickel base alloys are increasingly used in the chemical process industries. The successful use of these alloys not only depends on understanding the corrosion properties but also having knowledge of the microstructure and fabrication characteristics. Using mainly case histories, this presentation will discuss material issues in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Spouses and guests are invited and welcome. This meeting will be held at Williamson Restaurant, Easton Road, Horsham, PA. Reservations are necessary - Call: (215) 643-3369 (OH-DE-FOX), or you may register using our online form. Please don't call if you have already reserved via this web site LINK. *NOTE - NO MORE OH DE FOX after the September meeting -- Rob DeKalb has gotten so good at projecting our attendance that we have decided we can stop using oh-de-fox. We plan to cut it off after the September meeting. Please call Rob only if you have a significant change in attendance - if you are bringing a group for a particular meeting.
