Monthly Newsletter of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter

Chairperson's Message for January, 2001

I hope that you and your families had a happy and healthy holiday season. As we start off a new year, we have many new and exciting things happening in "your" chapter. Most important is our first meeting of the new year, our National Officers Night. At this year's meeting, which will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2001, we are honored and privileged to have the President of ASM International, Dr. Aziz Asphahani FASM, visit and present a technical talk on "Stress Corrosion Cracking of Stainless Materials". Accompanying Dr. Asphahani will be Karen Williams who is the Senior Manager of Chapter Relations.

Members of our executive board will meet Aziz and Karen on January 18th and tour the sustaining member's facility of Tinius Olsen. After the tour, the National officers will attend the session of our executive board meeting where they hear reports of all the chairmen of the various committees. This will then be followed by our evening dinner/technical program.

Our Young Members and Students Night meeting in November was extremely well attended. The new incentives of a student drawing, an excellent collegiate speaker, as well as the executive board's decision to cover the costs for all student dinners for this occasion, were the main reasons for the increased attendance.

Our MEI Course, Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist, has begun and is well attended. We have a tremendous core of instructors for this course and we thank all of you for your volunteer spirit. The Entertainment Committee has a Phantoms game scheduled for Saturday afternoon January 13th at 1:35 PM. If you receive this notice prior to the game and would like to attend this event, please contact Rob DeKalb at Robert Wooler Co. Also, mark your calendar for March 31, 2001 for our annual "Spring Fling" dinner dance. This year this event will take place at the beautiful Old York Road Country Club in Spring House, PA ! We hope to see you all there ! This year we will be adding to our fund, another undergraduate scholarship, the Charles F. Burns Memorial Scholarship. Therefore we will be awarding a total of four undergraduate scholarships, along with awards for a new High School Science Project Competition. I strongly encourage all members to contact high school students and/or undergraduate material engineering students to inform them of these awards and scholarship opportunities.

I hope to see you all at the January 18th National Officers Night meeting.

Bob Hill
2000-2001 Chairperson

Stress Corrosion Cracking of Stainless Materials

While the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of stainless steels has been extensively studied, less information is available on the SCC of other stainless materials, specifically cobalt-based and nickel-based alloys. The SCC characteristics of CO-CR-W-Mo and of NI-Cr-MO containing alloys are illustrated. Distinctions between anodic "chloride-sulfide" stress cracking and cathodic "hydrogen" embrittlement are highlighted. Metallurgical factors (cold work, heat treatment, micro segregation, and long-range ordering) are discussed. Industrial applications in oil and gas (e.g., deep sour gas) and other industries are listed and experience to date is reviewed.

Spouses and guests are invited and welcome. This meeting will be held at Williamson Restaurant, Easton Road, Horsham, PA. Reservations are necessary - Call: (215) 643-3369 (OH-DE-FOX), or you may register using our online form. Please don't call if you have already reserved via this web site LINK.
