Honors and Past Chairmen Night

And so we come to the last meeting of our Chapter year. I hope that you have been able to take advantage of some of the opportunities that the Liberty Bell Chapter has made available to you this year. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did. They all took place because of the efforts of members of our executive board. I would like to thank all of them for the efforts that they have put forth this year.

We are better off financially than in the past few years, and we still have a strong reserve position. This is partly because of the rising stock market, but also because of some actions we have taken. Our meeting attendance has remained strong. We have had some excellent speakers. We have brought a number of new people, some young and some more senior, into leadership positions in the Chapter. We are in the process of running a survey to determine your needs and interests.

There are still a few more activities that remain before we close out our Chapter year. We have our May meeting coming up where we will announce this year's award winners and also honor our past Chairpersons. We have a tour of Drexel coming up the morning of the same day, May 20th. Our on-line membership survey also continues until May 14th. If you haven't already participated, please go the ASM website using the web address that appears elsewhere in this newsletter. While you are there, check your own web address listed with ASM to be sure it is current. Finally, we have our golf outing the morning of Monday June 7th at Limekiln Golf Club. Information on all of these activities is available elsewhere in this newsletter.

May 20th also marks the end of my year as your Chairperson. I would like to again thank you for your support and for giving me the honor of allowing me to serve as your Chairperson. Have a great summer.

Respectfully submitted,

Jim Watters
Chairperson 2003-04

Incoming Chairperson's Message

Honors and Past Chairmen Night

Nervous anticipation. That's the best way I can describe my feelings as we approach our May meeting. I am looking forward to my coming year as chairperson and hope to continue the rich tradition that has been so well established by our chapter. A tradition of consistently bringing together professionals in the materials fields to learn from one another and have the opportunity to get to know each other outside our work environments.

That being said, there is one recent "tradition" I would like to see our chapter change. For the last ten years (with one very small exception) our membership has been declining. This topic has been discussed ad nauseum in our E&O meetings for the past few years. We even broke new ground by becoming the first chapter to offer an online survey to our membership to learn what people expect from ASM in an attempt to retain and attract new members. We will be looking and learning from that information very soon. In the interim, what can we do? What can we do as an international organization, as a chapter and as individuals?

I would like to challenge every member of the chapter this year to not only attend as many meetings as they can, but to bring one guest to one meeting some time during the year. The best way to tell people about ASM is to show them what we are about.

As we prepare for next year, I would like to thank everyone for the encouraging words and offers of assistance (we could always use more). I would also like to thank Jim Watters for a great job this year and maintaining the high level of excellence the Liberty Bell chapter has come to expect in our 85 year history.

Scott Nyce
Chairperson 2004-05
