Chairperson's Message, Thursday, April 15, 2004, Sustaining Members Night We had another great meeting in February. Thank you to Liz Hoffman, our Young Members Chairperson for another great Student turnout. And thank you to our own Alan Lawley for his insightful comments on the challenges and opportunities for our Chapter, our Technical Society, and our Profession. Our April meeting is always the highlight of our Chapter Year. This year should be no exception. We will have Dr. John Fisher from Lehigh as our speaker. Dr. Fisher was a member of the Federal commission that investigated why the World Trade Center collapsed. His talk, World Trade Center Building Performance Study, will share some of his views and findings with us. We will have our Third Annual Graduate Student Poster Contest. This event has become one of the highlights of our Chapter calendar. We will also have displays by a number of our Sustaining Member Companies. I would like to ask that you take a few minutes to walk around the floor during the extended social hour. That's why it is extended. The people manning the booths are here to speak with you. Their companies may have become sustaining members because they are trying to sell something. Even if you are not in a position to buy anything, take a few minutes to speak with them. It may turn out that you know something or someone, an idea or a contact, that makes their effort worthwhile. At least, they will know you care that they are there. Last Year's Chair, Don Jordan, has been quietly working behind the scenes on two very important and worthwhile projects. Our Chapter now has a Mission Statement. It was approved at the February Executive and Operating Committees Meeting. A copy appears in this newsletter. We hope you will agree that it helps to provide direction and purpose to our programs. Don's Committee, Long Range Planning, is also in the midst of conducting a survey of our members' interests. You can learn more about the survey in this newsletter. It will be conducted by e-mail. If you do not have e-mail and your would like to participate, you can call me at 215-699-0690 and we will arrange for you to participate by regular mail. Thank you, Don, for your efforts.
