Chairperson's Message, November 19, 2003, Continuing Education Night The Chapter Year started off with a challenge. Our first meeting was the night of the hurricane. The forecast was for only an inch or two of rain, but it had rained a great deal already that week. The forecast winds of 50 miles per hour did come to pass. The result was the loss of power for a million people in the Philadelphia Region. Email made it possible for a lot of communication to take place the morning of the meeting. We decided to go ahead as scheduled. Only one person ended up being called home because power was out. However, for the second month in a row we were focused on our electrical infrastructure. Hats off to PECO, who got everything back on in a couple of days. By contrast, Virginia still had a lot of people without power a week later, and they were waiting for poles to be shipped in. The Executive and Operating Committee meeting in September was inspiring. Committee Chairpersons laid out their plans for the coming year. We are already starting to attack the need for more yearbook advertising. Everyone expressed their thanks to Ed Mazeika for another great job on the yearbook. At the meeting Fred Klock and Bob Rich laid out plans for the upcoming MEI course and Training Your People seminar in November. These programs are sponsored by the Career Development and Professional Development Committees respectively. You will find more information in this newsletter. We hope you and your companies will support these programs. If you haven't already signed up, you will need to move quickly. These programs will take place very soon. Tim Steber presented the program to attack yearbook advertising. This is a critical part of our financial picture. In the last couple of years we've had to scramble in May and June to try and fill our ad space. The job fell to a few people who are responsible for the yearbook, plus a couple of more who pitched in. This year we are getting the jump on it, and all E&O members will participate. If you know of a company that may be interested in advertising or that you are willing to solicit, please contact Mike Drakeley or John Janiszewski. At the September E&O meeting some changes to our investment strategy were discussed. We have two investment accounts. One is the general Chapter assets and the other is the Weiser scholarship fund set up by the J.W. Rex Company. These funds were invested in Schwab and Janus mutual funds. These mutual funds have not performed well, and they have been difficult to work with. The Finance Committee, with the approval of J.W. Rex, moved the money to State Farm mutual funds. We expect that they will prove more flexible and responsive, and that it will be easier to balance our portfolio in terms of asset category and risk. If you have questions about this change you should feel free to contact either Fred Klock or me. Respectfully submitted, Jim Watters Chairperson 2003-04 This Month's Meeting Features... Dinner Menu - Fresh Fruit Cup, Hearts of Lettuce, Roast Loin of Pork, Baked Stuffed Potato, Winter Mix and Ice Cream Croquette. Social Hour -- 6:00-7:00 p.m., Dinner -- 7:00 p.m. Price -- $22.00, Retirees -- $15.00, Students -- $10.00 Technical Chairperson: Roger Jones, Solar Atmospheres, Inc. Topic: History, Research, Myths & Applications of Cryogenic Processing Speaker: FREDERICK J. (Rick) DIEKMAN Frederick J. (Rick) Diekman (pronounced DEEKMAN) is President of Controlled Thermal Processing, Inc., a company that has been in the cryogenic processing business for over twenty years. (www.metal-wear.com) CTP has processing plants in Kenosha, WI and Mt. Ulla, NC, and supplies metallurgical consulting to racing and industry. He is the Chairman of the ASM Cryogenic Processing Sub Committee. He holds an engineering degree from Iowa State University. He has lectured on cryogenics at the annual Advanced Engine Technology Conference, the Experimental Aircraft Association Air Venture, the Cryogenic Society of America, and others. He has received awards for his presentations on cryogenic processing from the Society of Plastics Engineers. His article on the uses of cryogenic processing in racing was published in Heat Treating Progress, and he has written numerous other articles for other magazines on the subject. When not freezing things Rick restores Pierce-Arrow automobiles. He is a private pilot and Operations Officer for Squadron 4, Warbirds of America. Topic: History, Research, Myths & Applications of Cryogenic Processing Each year, cryogenic processing gains a bigger beachhead in industry. Yet it remains a controversial subject, especially among metallurgists. No one can explain exactly why the process achieves its astounding results, and it is often hard to separate legitimate claims from the hype created by hucksters. This talk will summarize the history of the process, talk about recent research, explore some of the silly myths, and give an overview of current applications. Spouses and guests are invited and welcome. This meeting will be held at Williamson Restaurant, Easton Road, Horsham, PA. Reservations are necessary - Call: (215) 643-3369 (OH-DE-FOX), or you may register using our online form. Please don't call if you have already reserved via this web site LINK. ASM Scholarships Philadelphia "Liberty Bell" Chapter is offering its scholarships for the year 2004. For undergraduates, there are a number of scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $1,500. The scholarship application is due on March 1st, 2004. For postgraduates, we are sponsoring our third poster contest with cash prizes. The poster contest will take place at the April meeting on April 15th, 2004. As for high school students, there will be an ASM Materials Camp at Lehigh University next summer. This is a week long program, all expenses paid! For an application or information on any of these programs, please contact Dr. Kei-Peng Jen at 610.519.7311 or kei-peng.jen@villanova.edu. All applications for undergraduate scholarships must be received no later than March 1st, 2004. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!! Leadership Days This year the Chapter had three representatives at Leadership Days in Metals Park Cleveland in August. Jim Watters and Scott Nyce represented the Chapter, and Roger Jones was there as a presenter. On Saturday night there was a dinner under the dome at Materials Park with the high school students who had attended Materials Camp. The chapter was presented with the ASMI Five Star Award for last year. This award was then given to Don Jordan at the September chapter meeting. At the September meeting, Scott Nyce spoke after dinner about the inspiration that came from meeting, interacting, and exchanging ideas with members of ASMI chapters from all over North America.
