Chairperson's Message, October 16, 2003, Young Members Night As I write this it is Labor Day, and we are still two weeks away from the September meeting. You should have received your September newsletter, and by the time you read this we will have had the September meeting. This is our kick off for the year, and my first meeting as your Chairperson. I hope you are as excited about the meeting and the speaker as I am. One of the highlights of the Sept. meeting will be the presentation of ASM's Five Star Chapter award to last year's Chair, Don Jordan. Don did a great job, and I look forward to upholding the high standards he set. The Five Star award was presented to the Philadelphia Chapter at this year's leadership days in Cleveland in August. Scott Nyce and I accepted the award on your behalf. Roger Jones was also at the meeting as an invited speaker. Roger's topic was Membership Development. During one presentation our web site was held up as an example of a very professional site. The power blackout occurred during the meeting. The staff and the hotel did a great job, and the inconvenience was minimal. Scott lost some sleep. Roger and I arrived after power was back on, but you could not drink the water. I had to brush my teeth with Pepsi. One gentleman who came from Europe was stranded in New York and arrived Sunday as the meeting was ending. Many people have been working hard through the summer to get everything set up for the chapter year. Fred Klock and Roger Jones put together the seminar which will take place at SPS in November - "Training Your People and Getting Paid for It." Bob Rich and Fred Klock are moving ahead with plans for this year's MEI course on Failure Analysis. John Janiszewski put together the program for the year. Don Jordan took care of all of the year end paperwork for ASM International. Mike Drakeley and Ed Mazieka moved the Yearbook along. We had a great planning meeting in June and a very good Finance meeting in August. Unfortunately our September meeting is the same week as the ASM Heat Treat Show in Indianapolis, and October is the same week as the ASM Materials Solutions Expo in Pittsburgh. If you would like free tickets for the Pittsburgh expo, we will be giving them out at the September meeting, but I expect to still have some available. Give me a call if you need any. We'd love to have all of you at our chapter meetings, but if you are at one of these functions we will certainly understand. We hope to be doing more communication in the future by e-mail, so please check your membership listing at asminternational.org to see if they have your correct listing. It should be another outstanding year for the Philadelphia Chapter of ASM International. Respectfully submitted, Jim Watters Chairperson 2003-04 This Month's Meeting Features...
