Monthly Newsletter of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter

Chairperson's Message, Thursday, February 20, 2003, Eisenman Award Night

February means that our program year is half over, so if you have missed out on the first half of the year, please be sure to make a special effort to support us in the second half. You won't be disappointed; it only takes attendance to one meeting for you to realize that it is worth the effort in coming. This month's meeting is an especially good one to attend because it is William Hunt Eisenman Award night and we have a dynamic recipient, Toni Bruger. Toni is Vice President of the Coil Business Group at Carpenter Technologies Corp., and also was our Chapter Chairperson in 1989/90. The Eisenman Award is given by the Chapter in recognition of dedicated service to the Society, foresight, dynamic management, leadership, and promotion of the materials industry and materials education. The pertinence of Toni's talk "Effectively Supplying Special Metals in a World Market" speaks for itself, and it is certainly a topic that none of us will want to miss.

February also is the month where I appoint a Nominating Committee that prepares a list of names for submission to the Chapter for election to the various Chapter offices. We are in real need of volunteers for these offices. If you would like to be recognized in a unique way within your materials community, please volunteer. The amount of work involved with some positions is actually quite small, but the experience gained is immense. Please contact me at 215-721-1502 x 206 or dfj@solaratm.com.

As I did last month, I request that students read the notice on scholarship applications. We will be awarding four undergraduate student scholarships, there will be a graduate student poster contest, and there is the all expenses paid Materials Camp for high school students. Also remember that we offer free bus transportation from Philadelphia to all of our monthly meetings. Contact Jonathan Thomas at jthomas@drexel.edu for details. Further note that there is a plant tour of STORK, MMA Laboratories on February 19th at 2:00 pm. This is a joint sponsorship between the Young Members Committee and Professional Development Committee.

Thank you all for the your support. Never forget that the fellowship and networking opportunities alone make coming to the meetings worth while. See you February 20th!

Don Jordan
2002-2003 Chairperson

Toni Bruger received her B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Lafayette College. She started her career as a Heat Treat Metallurgist with Phoenix Steel Corporation. Her technical knowledge and managerial talent led to her promotion to Technical Services Manager. She worked for Bishop Tube and for Phoenix Pipe and Tube as Chief Metallurgist and Manager of Product Development. In 1994 she joined Carpenter Technology Corporation as a Senior Metallurgist where her ability and performance led to managerial promotions to her present position of Vice President - Coil Business Group. She is responsible for the manufacturing, technology, sales and marketing of the company's coiled products. Toni served the chapter on several committees including Chapter Chairman in 1989/90 and is active on National committees.

Topic: Effectively Supplying Specialty Metals In A World Market

Her talk, Specialty Metals in a World Market, will address the challenges of producing a technically superior, competitively priced, product in a global environment. With the challenging environment that exists today, a company must be prepared to not only act quickly, but with the correct vision and values in mind. A company must ensure it's leaders know what will drive success so that actions taken are swift, in sync with the company's goals and utilize the resources around them effectively. With clear focus, effective communication, and clear responsibilities the power, creativity and achievable results of the company are unlimited.

Spouses and guests are invited and welcome. This meeting will be held at Williamson Restaurant, Easton Road, Horsham, PA. Reservations are necessary - Call: (215) 643-3369 (OH-DE-FOX), or you may register using our online form. Please don't call if you have already reserved via this web site LINK.

April Meeting: Sustaining Members Night A Week Early

Be sure and plan on coming to the April Meeting. Because our normal meeting night is both Passover and Maundy Thursday we decided to schedule the meeting for the Second Thursday of the month. It promises to be a great night.

We will be holding our second annual poster contest for graduate students. Last year about a dozen grad students displayed posters which described their research. It was extremely popular with both the students and our regular members. Also we are fortunate to have Ms. Anne Richards as our speaker.

Anne, a Drexel alum, is Vice President of North American Operations for Ford. Her topic is "Technical and Human Challenges in a Vehicle Launch, or Blood Sweat and Tears." Dr. Alan Lawley of Drexel will be our Technical Chairperson for the night.

In addition, as always, many of the sustaining member companies will display materials which describe their companies. It's always our biggest night of the year. We hope to see you there.

MMA Tour

The professional development committee & the young members committee will be sponsoring a plant tour of MMA labs in Newtown PA on February 19, 2003 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. MMA is a full service material testing facility, which should prove interesting to all who attend. If interested in attending, please contact Scott Nyce or Roger Jones @ Solar Atmospheres @ 215-721-1502 or @ raj@solaratm.com or dsn@solaratm.com.

ASM Spring Dinner Dance

This year's ASM Spring Dinner Dance will be held on Saturday, April 12th at the Old York Road Country Club starting at 6:00 pm. Please reserve this date on your calendars. If you would like to become a Sponsor for this occasion, please contact Melissa Morris at mmm@solaratm.com

April Poster Contest

On April 10th, before our general meeting, the Liberty Bell chapter will hold our second poster contest for graduate students in our area. Last yearŐs contest was a great success and we hope to build upon that for this year.

We will be offering cash prizes again, $500 for first place, $300 for second & $200 for third. Due to space limitations, we will need applicants to pre-register before the contest. Please contact Scott Nyce at 215-721-1502 x219 or dsn@solaratm.com.

ASM Scholarships

Philadelphia "Liberty Bell" Chapter is offering its scholarships again this year. For undergraduates, there are 4 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $1,500. For postgraduates, we are sponsoring our second poster contest with cash prizes. High school students, there is the ASM Materials Camp. This is a weeklong program at Materials Park, Ohio, all expenses paid!
