Monthly Newsletter of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter

Chairperson's Message, Thursday, September 19, 2002

Almost always, and as it should be, the incoming Chairpersons' message needs to start with acknowledgement of the stalwart dedication and work of past and present volunteers who consistently make the Philadelphia Chapter one of the envies of the world. (We received the honor of "Chapter of Excellence", or "Best Chapter in the World", in 1999-2000 under Jeff Waldman's Chairmanship.) We have over 80 years of tradition backing us in the materials industry, and no organization serves its community better than our Chapter. Everyone knows that the Philadelphia area is the original capital of the metals industry in this country, and that we have a bloodline that will never stop pumping.

The past year was very exciting for us as we strived to have new and different events happen, like the graduate student poster contest. This poster contest was the most enthusiastically talked about meeting change we have had in recent times. So, following this response, we open the year's program with a new and refreshingly different topic: Understanding Patents in Materials Engineering, by patent attorney Eric LaMorte. I have heard Eric present his talk and I can assure you that you will want to hear this presentation. If you don't feel you have any insider knowledge of patents, don't let the title scare you away from coming. The talk is for technical and non technical people alike. In Eric's world, toys constitute engineering. Come and see what I mean.

At ASM International "Leadership Days", which happens every summer (note that this is free leadership training for you), the Philadelphia Chapter gets the highest possible praise for the quality and comprehensive content of its annual yearbook. I request that you read your yearbook and distribute the extra copies that we have at every meeting to your associates. Also, please read my incoming Chairperson's message, which emphasizes our need for volunteer help. It is only through the participation of the whole that we succeed and maintain our admired worldly status. We have new and young committee chairpersons and directors this year to establish a program that is enticing to all. One of our Directors is Drexel University graduate student, Jonathan Thomas, whom I've asked to oversee our website. Also of Drexel University is the incomparable group of the Young Members Committee: Milan Ivosevic, Svetlana Dimovski, and Elizabeth Hoffman. If you thought the first annual graduate poster contest was great, wait till you see this year's event, when the best and brightest help run it!

Obviously, my message here is let's have an excitingly new and refreshingly young outlook to our Chapter. Please come out and support Opening Night. It will help us continue to be one of the best in the world! Don't forget that the networking and fellowship amongst Chapter members is an extremely valuable career tool; I know it has been for me.

Don Jordan
2002-2003 Chairperson

Eric has written patents for many Fortune 500 companies including AT&T, Lucent Technologies, ITT, Sony, Seimens and Harris Semiconductor. Throughout his career Eric has presented lectures to both corporations and the public informing them of all matters of intellectual property law. Eric has a BSME from Villanova, Class of 86, and a Juris Doctorate from Seton Hall, Class of 89. He is a member of the Bars for the State of New Jersey, the State of Pennsylvania and the United States Patent Office.

An introduction describing what a patent is, and what is and is not patentable will be presented. Peco Nuclear Facility Tour - Oct. 22nd

A tour of the PECO Nuclear Facility in Limerick PA has been set up for Tuesday, October 22nd at 3 pm. It is open to all ASM members. Because of 9/11, visitors are no longer allowed into the reactor building itself. However, PECO has an excellent visitor center, including models and displays. We will be given a formal presentation, and there will be time for questions and answers. If you have a technical question you can even submit it in advance. The entire program is expected to last an hour and a half. The visitor center is no longer open to the general public it is only open by invitation. You must register at least a week in advance for this program, and you will be required to give your social security number when you do register. This is another security precaution. You should call or email Roger Jones to register at raj@solaratm.com. If you prefer not to email your social security number you can call Roger at 215-721-1502. Questions for PECO should be sent to Roger as well. PECO understands that many of us are PECO customers as well as PECO suppliers, and they plan to have technical personnel available to answer your questions.
