Chairperson's Message for Thursday, April 18, 2002, Sustaining Member Night This month, I have several exciting developments in Chapter activities to report to the membership. First, at the February Executive/Operating Committee meeting, the committee agreed to start a review of the Chapter long range plan. While we continually update the long range plan, this review will be a more comprehensive top-to-bottom review of our Chapter's mission, goals, and structure. Our intention is to take the balance of this chapter year and most of next year to determine what we should be doing, and what is the best way to do it. Jeff Waldman will be chairing this activity as part of his duties as Long Range Planning Chair until May, at which time I will take over, again as Long Range Planning Chair. At the moment, activities center on establishing the members of this review committee. I will continue to update you as the committee begins working; you may also hear from individual committee members as they go about this review. Second, I would like to report that our Student activities are showing a vitality that is unprecedented. Our scholarship program has been highly publicized and we have a good number of qualified applicants for our four scholarships for next year. The bus from center city to the meetings has been an unqualified success; so much so, that in February a retired member also took advantage of this mode of transportation to avoid driving home late at night. Also on the student level, this year's candidates for Chapter Director include a Drexel graduate student. We're looking to Jonathan Thomas to bring a fresh voice to the board. His involvement with the Philadelphia chapter goes back several years to when he was a two time scholarship winner. Finally, we have a varied program for this month's Sustaining Members night. As you may have noticed, our speaker has changed. Scott Moyer was reassigned early and could not attend. In his place, we have obtained Col. James Buck, who is Vice Wing Commander of the 913th Airlift Wing at the Willow Grove Air Reserve Station. We are eagerly anticipating Col. Buck to provide a local viewpoint on the military activities in support of the current anti-terrorist campaigns. This month's meeting will also feature the first-ever graduate student poster contest, held in conjunction with the Sustaining Members Exhibition. Come out early, and see both our members' exhibits and the work that is being done in local materials programs. Hope to see you there! Also, don't forget the annual Spring Fling dinner dance. This year, it will again be held at the Old York Country Club on April 13. There are still tickets available, so contact Mike Drakeley at Solar Atmospheres for reservations. You can contact Mike at 215.721.1502 or mjd@solaratm.com. John Janiszewski 2002 Chairperson This Month's Meeting Features... The replacement speaker for the April 18 meeting will be Colonel James W. Buck from the Willow Grove Air Reserve Station. Colonel Buck is the Vice Commander of the 913th Airlift Wing at Willow Grove. Colonel Buck's presentation will address the mission of the Willow Grove Naval Air Station, and how it is currently supporting the US military forces. Willow Grove Air Reserve Station is the largest reserve complex in the continental United States. It is jointly supported by the Defense Department and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In addition to active duty and reserve United States Forces, Willow Grove is the home base for a substantial contingent of Pennsylvania National Guard personnel. Willow Grove Air Reserve Station is adjacent to Willow Grove Naval Air Station, which was created in World War II as a naval air training facility. It has been a fixture on 162 acres along Route 611 in Horsham Township since 1958. Col. Buck will focus on how the mission of Willow Grove Air Reserve Station has changed as the mission and size of the US military has evolved. Col. Buck will also address Willow Grove's impact on the local economy and population. Colonel James Buck is currently the Vice Commander of the 913th Airlift Wing at the Willow Grove Air Reserve Base. WELCOME Advertise In Our 2002-2003 Yearbook Our Chapter is in the process of publishing our yearbook for the 2002-2003 year. Officers of ASM International have told us that our yearbook is "one of the best." We hope that you would consider advertising in the 2002-2003 yearbook, which reviews the events and the people that make our organization so valuable to professionals in the materials engineering field. It also serves as a directory of companies who provide high quality and valuable equipment, services and materials to serve our members and their companies. We ask that you please consider supporting the 2002-2003 yearbook with your company advertisement. Your ad placed in approximately 1200 yearbooks will cost less than the price of a postage stamp per book. For example, a full page ad costs $375.00. ($375.00 / 1200 books = $0.31 per book) As our way of saying "thank you," we will add your name as a yearbook advertiser on all eight of our Chapter Newsletters for the 2002-2003 year. We appreciate your support. Should you have any questions or desire additional information, please contact Philip M. DeHennis, Chairman, Advertising Committee, 215-635-0845; pdehennis@yahoo.com. Meeting Cancellation Notification In the event of cancellation of a meeting due to inclement weather, we will broadcast the news as part of KYW News radio's (1060AM) Storm Center Service. ASM cancellations will be specifically announced when KYW airs community cancellations at :20 and :50 past each hour during the afternoon of the day of the meeting; ASM's name will be specifically mentioned, so listen for the name rather than an organization number as is used for schools. Do you have news... that should be shared with the other members of the "Liberty Bell" Chapter? If so, please email your info to Jim Watters at dvua2@cs.com.
