Monthly Newsletter of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter

Chairperson's Message for Thursday, March 21, 2002, Sauveur Award Night

At this time of year, we are into what could be called "awards season." Since the first of the year, we've had our annual National Officer's visit (kind of an award to the chapter) and the February presentation of the Eisenman award and lecture. This month will see our presenter, Prof. Herbert Herman, accept the chapter's Sauveur award and provide a discussion on thermal spray technology. This technology has been advancing rapidly during the past few years, as seen by developments such as the ASM-affiliated Thermal Spray Society's formation and activities. It will be quite enlightening to see what new developments are around the corner for this technology.

At the Chapter level, the Executive and Operating Committees are finishing up this year's activities and planning for next year. Don't forget our Sustaining members' recognition lunch, which will be held at the Drafting Room in Spring House, PA on March 28. Also, our annual Sustaining Members Exhibition and Meeting will be on April 18.

All work and no play makes for a pretty boring spring time. We have two chapter activities coming up to help to shake off the winter blues. First, on March 14, we will tour the University of Pennsylvania Museum with several ASM members as our tourguides. This looks like a unique opportunity to see antiquity through the eyes of materials engineers. Second, a purely social program will be our annual Spring Dinner Dance on April 13. This year, we will be returning to the beautiful Old York Road Country Club for this event. Hope to see you there!

As a final reminder- if anyone knows a student who is eligible for one of the four chapter-administered scholarships, please encourage him/her to apply. Scott Nyce (215-721-1502), our Scholarship Committee Chair, can supply information and applications.

John Janiszewski
2002 Chairperson

Dr. Herbert Herman is a Leading Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and since 1996 has served as Director of the Center for Thermal Spray Research NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center.

Dr. Herman received his B.S. in Mathematics and Physics from DePaul University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Paris, a Senior Research Associate at Argonne National Laboratory, and an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Professional highlights of his career have included supervising and advising 50 graduate students and serving as the Ford Foundation Professor in Industry, Liaison Scientist at U.S. ONR, London, Editor of "Treatise in Materials Science and Technology" (Academic Press), and Editor-in-Chief the journal "Materials Science and Engineering." He was the Founding Chairman of the Thermal Spray Division of ASM International.

Dr. Herman is a Fellow of ASM International, Fellow American Ceramic Society, and is a member of International Academy of Ceramics, Thermal Spray Society Hall of Fame, The Metallurgical Society, American Welding Society, American Society for Engineering Education, AAAS, and Sigma Xi. He has published over 200 papers and holds 9 patents in Material Science and Engineering.

Topic: Thermal Spray Science & Technology Current Status & Future Trends

The protection of engineering materials by overlay coatings has allowed structures to function under extreme conditions and has made feasible the introduction of novel materials into high performance applications. Surface engineering, using thermal spray coatings, represents a pragmatic and highly cost-effective means of satisfying stringent design criteria (e.g., in aerospace applications) for operating under extreme environments (e.g., high temperatures, wear, corrosion) and introducing a multiplicity of functions (e.g., thermal barrier, biomedical implants, electronic multi-layers). In addition to traditional applications of thermal spray, there is a rapidly growing activity in using this technology for producing engineered functional surfaces (e.g., Meso-Integrated Conformal Electronics). A brief introduction to thermal spray will be given, followed by recent developments in the field. Finally, an endeavor will be made to forecast the future role of thermal spray in engineering.

Spouses and guests are invited and welcome. This meeting will be held at Williamson Restaurant, Easton Road, Horsham, PA. Reservations are necessary - Call: (215) 643-3369 (OH-DE-FOX), or you may register using our online form. Please don't call if you have already reserved via this web site LINK.

Sustaining Member Spotlight - Delaware Valley Utility Advisors

DVUA was founded in 1991 by Jim Watters. The company's mission is to help its commercial and industrial clients save money on utility costs - primarily energy costs but also water and sewer and telecommunications costs. Jim has been an ASM member going back to his undergraduate days at Illinois in the 60's, and on and off during his professional career. He became a member of the Philadelphia Chapter in 1983, and DVUA became a Chapter Sustaining Member in 1992. Most of DVUA's clients are manufacturers. Just about all of them have been in an area from Detroit to Boston to Atlanta, and about half within a two hour drive of Philadelphia. Several are heat treaters. "In a previous life" Jim worked for Bethlehem Steel, Corning Glass, and in the industrial gas business marketing heat treating atmospheres and argon and oxygen for steelmaking.

DVUA finds utility billing errors, rate alternatives, opportunities for reducing peak power demands, and energy conservation opportunities. Power companies make more billing errors than you might think, and peak power demand charges usually account for 30 to 40% of most electric bills. In telecommunications DVUA looks at traffic flows and line utilization as well as call routing and PBX programming. DVUA still has several clients that were signed up during its first year in business. Most clients are on multi-year contracts that provide for ongoing efforts that result in continuous cost improvement over time. Savings for several clients have exceeded $1 million. Much of the effort is done on a shared savings basis.

In the past year or so DVUA publications and presentations have included:

1. "Energy Savings Economics - Not Always What they Seem" in Energy Engineering, the Journal of the Association of Energy Engineers, co-authored with The Budd Company of Philadelphia.

2. "Sights on Energy Efficient Lighting" for an Energy Conservation Workshop sponsored by the Pennsylvania DEP.

3. "Controlling Your Energy Costs" for the Summer 2001 meeting of the Metal Treating Institute.

4. "High Tech Energy Audits" written at the invitation of the editor and scheduled for future publication in Heating, Piping and Air Conditioning, co-authored with The Interfaith Coalition for Energy.

Bus Boosts Student Attendance

This year ASM is making a push to increase student attendance. At the October meeting the chapter provided a bus from Drexel University to the Williamson Restaurant and back. The result was that 20 students from Drexel attended the meeting. As a result, at the November board meeting a decision was made to provide a bus for the balance of the year. For the January, February, March, April, and May meetings the chapter will have a bus available to transport students from Drexel University as well as The University of Pennsylvania to the meetings. If you need more information please contact Professor Jeff Waldman at Drexel, 215-895-2331.
