Monthly Newsletter of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter

Chairperson's Message for Thursday, January 17, 2002, National Officers Night

As Redd Foxx used to say, this is the big one! It's the time of year when ASM sends the big guns to Philadelphia so they can hear what's been going on in our chapter, and to give us a chance to have the ASMI President talk to us about what's going on at the national, and now international, levels.

This year presents some unusual situations. First, of course, is the new state of the world. Dr. Gordon Geiger, ASMI President for 2001-2002, has spent a considerable part of his career in the steel industry. It will be most enlightening to hear his perspective on the changes to world markets in the short and long terms. From an ASMI perspective, another change concerns the national leadership. By the time of the meeting, we probably won't know who Mike DeHaemer's successor will be. However, it will certainly be fun to ask!

This is also a good time to take a mid-year look at our committee activities and see how we're doing. The first half of the year saw a considerable amount of progress in our young member and scholarship activities, particularly with Drexel University. Scott Nyce, Ken Moyer, Michelle Morris, and Don Jordan have done a tremendous job, with the assistance of Jeff Waldman and John DeLuccia, and we look forward to building on their efforts for the rest of this year. The advertising and yearbook committees are hitting full speed and by the January meeting the information for next year's book will be in the hands of the advertisers. The sustaining members committee has two activities coming up, with our annual appreciation luncheon and sustaining members' night in April. And, as always, entertainment is busy planning the Phantoms game on January 12 (call Mike Drakeley at 215-721-1502 for tickets) and the Spring Fling dance (date to be announced). I also do not intend to slight those committees that weren't mentioned; there are a considerable number of committees who work consistently throughout the year without having the single "big event", but who nevertheless provide valuable support to the chapter. To all our volunteers, thank you.

Which brings me to a final point. Selections for next year's committees will begin in January and continue until the open slots are filled. I encourage anyone who is interested in chairing or serving on a committee to contact either myself (215.641.8849) or Don Jordan (215.721.1502). Experience is not necessary; enthusiasm is!

As usual, I would like to encourage all ASM Philadelphia Chapter members to attend the January 17, 2002 meeting and take advantage of the comradeship of the materials community. Hope to see you there!

John Janiszewski
2002 Chairperson
