Chairperson's Message for Wednesday, November 14, 2001, Continuing Education Night
Due to the demands of typesetting and printing schedules, I am writing this November message between the September and October meetings. Therefore, I'd like to focus a bit on a few impressions from the closeness in time of the September meeting and the terrorist attacks on the US.
Our speaker, Brian Higgins, discussed production of high purity, high quality materials by use of the electron beam furnace. Where do these materials go? Much of this production winds up in the aerospace and electronics industries. This realization reminded me that over the next few years, our country and our fellow citizens will be depending on the materials industry to make the materials that are needed to convert the designers' concepts into real products. In large measure, success in protecting ourselves from terrorism in the future will depend on the materials community. I know that I speak for the materials community in welcoming this challenge and guaranteeing our ultimate success.
The second impression from Brian's talk was how small the world has become. During conversation during dinner, he mentioned buying niobium ores from Russia, tantalum ore from Australia or Africa, and other raw materials from China and Brazil. In spite of temporary nation-to-nation arguments, it is apparent that global commerce is here to stay and it will only bind the world closer in the long term.
I would like to encourage all ASM Philadelphia Chapter members to attend the November 14, 2001 meeting and take advantage of the comradeship of the materials community. Hope to see you there!

Topic: Materials and Processing for Semiconductor and Opto-electronic Packaging
Timothy Ellis is the Director of Corporate Research and Development for Kulicke and Soffa Industries (K&S) the largest supplier of semiconductor interconnect solutions in the world. His work focus is on advanced materials technology development for semiconductor and optoelectronic packaging. Prior to joining K&S he was a scientist at the Ames Laboratory U.S.D.O.E. at Iowa State University with a research focus on rare earth metallurgy and science. Tim received his Ph.D. from Iowa State in 1993, and a MS in Chemistry and BS in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. Present alternate weekends are occupied in pursuit of a MS in Technology Management at the University of Pennsylvania. When not globe trotting for K&S Tim can be found sailing the Chesapeake Bay or wandering the backwoods of Upper Michigan.
Material performance and joining issues abound in present day semiconductor and optoelectronic packages. Moore's law states performance increases by a factor of 2 every 18-24 months. The corollary is that cost also decrease by this factor in the same time frame.
This is especially challenging for the materials science and engineering community. In this presentation the implication of semiconductor industries packaging roadmap on the materials field will be outlined and discussed.

Practical Heat Treating
The Greater Philadelphia Section of The American Society for Nondestructive Testing and The Philadelphia "Liberty Bell" Chapter of ASM International is presenting the MEI course Practical Heat Treating.
When: Tuesday evenings 27 November 2001 through 19 March 2002. 6:30 to 9:00 PM
Where: SPS Technologies -- Highland Ave. Jenkintown, PA
Cost: $270.00 includes the 15 lesson course with 2.8 CEUs, Qualified ASMI instructors and a video presentation each week.

Is Your E-mail Address Correct?
Recently, the Chapter sent a mass e-mailing to Chapter members through ASM International's website. About 400 Chapter members have e-mail addresses on their member information; of those, about 70 were returned because the e-mail address was incorrect.

Phantoms Hockey Game
Come out to a Phantoms Hockey Game on Saturday, January 12th at 7:00 p.m. The Phantoms are playing Providence and the game will be played at the FU Center not the Spectrum. On a recent visit, Scott Nyce and Don Jordan enjoyed the hospitality of DrexelÕs MAGNET (Materials Engineering Graduate Students Network) affirming ASMÕs committment to student members and establishing transportation to our Young Members Night. We look forward to maintaining an active relationship with these students as we encourage young member participation in the Liberty Bell Chapter.
