Chairperson's Message for October 2000 Last year, our September chapter meeting was cancelled, due to the forces of nature and the fury of Hurricane Floyd. This year, our September meeting was a huge success. What a difference one year makes! Tim Kinsella's presentation on stealth materials was most informative. I would like to thank Rod McMillan (Technical Chairperson), Carpenter Technologies (sustaining member) and Tim, for a most memorable evening. I would like to invite all of our members, their spouses, students, and guests to attend the October 19th meeting. At this meeting, William R. Jones, CEO of Solar Atmospheres, will present a most intriguing talk about processing metallurgical materials in the year 2000 and beyond. Bill, a true entrepreneur and an expert in vacuum technology, was the past President of Abar Corp., founder of Vacuum Furnace Systems, and currently the CEO of the largest vacuum commercial heat treating facility in the country, Solar Atmospheres, Inc., Souderton, PA. I will personally guarantee that you find Bill's talk most enjoyable. I would like to also remind all members of the top ten reasons to remain or become an ASM member of the Philadelphia Chapter. They are:
Our chapter needs new members! Our chapter needs your involvement! Please plan to participate in all of our technical and or social activities that are planned throughout the year. See you October 19th ! Bob Hill 2000-2001 Chairperson Our Next Meeting: Thursday, October 19, 2000 Continuing Education Night Dinner Menu (Buffet) - choice of Beef Burgundy w/Two Grain Rice, Sliced Virginia Baked Ham, Stuffed Breast of Chicken in Wine Sauce, Baked Salmon in Dill Sauce. Also includes: Caesar Salad, Potatoes au Gratin, String Beans Almondine, Mocha Parfait, Fresh Fruit Watermelon Boat, Beverage and Rolls Social Hour -- 6:00-7:00 p.m., Dinner -- 7:00 p.m. Price -- $17.00, student/retirees -- $7.00 Technical Chairperson: Mr. Bob Hill, Solar Atmospheres, Inc. Speaker: Mr. William R. Jones, Solar Atmospheres, Inc. Topic: Processing Metallurgical Materials in the Year 2000 and Beyond William R. Jones is the founder of Vacuum Furnace Systems Corporation (1978) and Solar Atmospheres, Inc. (1982), a commercial heat treating company. Both companies are located in Souderton, PA. Mr. Jones is a life-long Delaware Valley resident, born in Bethayres and a graduate of Lower Moreland High School in Huntingdon Valley. He holds a degree in Electrical Technology from the Pennsylvania State University, Abington, 1955. Mr. Jones' entire career has been associated with the development and application of electro-mechanical products and since 1962 with the vacuum heat treating furnace. He holds numerous patents in this field and has long been associated with the American Society for Materials and related technical organizations, and is a Fellow of ASM International. He is the recipient of the ASM International 1995 William Hunt Eisenman Award. Mr. Jones has contributed numerous technical articles for ASM, Metal Heat Treating and Industrial Heating magazines and authored papers for the ASM Heat Treating Conferences and for other technical organizations, including the Metal Treating Institute. He is a member of the American Vacuum Society, Delaware Valley chapter. Mr. Jones is an elder in the Presbyterian Church in America, Lansdale, PA, and he is a member of the Biblical Theological Seminary Board of Directors, Hatfield, PA. He and his wife, Myrtle, have two grown children who are also active in the Solar company. Processing Metallurgical Materials in the Year 2000 and Beyond Excluding the blacksmith era, the modern heat treatment of metals is of the order of 100 years old. As we are at the turn of the century, it would be nice to predict what the art and science of heat treating might be 100 years from now. However, this far too difficult to foresee, but one can peek, say into the next quarter century, and present and observe. Obviously one's predictions are based on very immediate past and current operations. Since my primary experience is with a relatively high technology operation, and the use of the vacuum furnace and related technology, my views will be slanted in the direction of emerging applications and the greater use of vacuum processing for the alloy steels with turbulent inert gas quenching and the like. Spouses and guests are invited and welcome. This meeting will be held at Williamson Restaurant, Easton Road, Horsham, PA. Reservations are necessary - Call: (215) 643-3369 (OH-DE-FOX), or you may register using our online form. Please don't call if you have already reserved via this web site LINK. Attention Students!! The Liberty Bell Chapter extends our welcome and invites all full-time students to come out and enjoy dinner on us! Just show us your appropriate student ID at the registration table and join us as we explore our world of materials and their applications. Also as of October 19, we will be giving a $25 cash door prize for all full-time students (members or guests), at each of our regular monthly dinner meetings. Just let us know at the registration table and you could be our lucky winner! ASM Philadelphia Receives "Five Star Award" At the annual "Leadership Days" which were held in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 12-13, the Philadelphia Liberty Bell Chapter was presented with the "Five Star Award". Our chapter was evaluated in accordance to ASM's strategic vision primarily on how we:
Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist The Greater Philadelphia Section of The American Society for Nondestructive Testing and The Philadelphia "Liberty Bell" Chapter of ASM International is presenting the MEI course Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist. When: Tuesday evenings 28 November 2000 through 20 March 2001, 6:30 to 9:00 PM Where: SPS Technologies -- Highland Ave. Jenkintown, PA Cost: $270.00 includes the 15 lesson course with 2.8 CEUs, Qualified ASMI instructors and a video presentation each week. Who Should Attend: This is an ideal first course for anyone who needs a working understanding of metals and their applications. It has been designed for those with no previous training in metallurgy, such as technical, laboratory, and sales personnel; engineers from other disciplines; management and administrative staff; and non-technical support staff such as purchasing and receiving agents who order and inspect incoming material. A basic understanding of chemistry and physics is strongly suggested. Course Overview: Presents a brief history of metals, providing insight into the discovery and use of pure metals and alloys thousands of years before the modern era. Provides an explanation of the unique physical characteristics of metals, including the reasons that metals behave differently that such non-metals as plastics, glass, wood, etc. Explains the basis for the selection of the different metals for specific engineering applications. Describes how metals are alloyed to achieve desired properties. Provides details on one of the most important of all alloys - steel - and discusses how steel is heat treated to achieve various combinations of strengths and ductility. Explains how metals are formed into the components that are used in our most important engineered machines and structures. Describes how metals are tested to determine critical properties, such as strength, ductility and toughness. Discusses why metals corrode, why different metals behave differently in corrosive environments, and how the corrosion of metals can be controlled. For more information call Fred Klock or Bob Rich at 215-572-3485 Fax 215-572-3725.
